Various Forms Of Acne Treatment Worcester

By Kristen Baird

The medications for acne work through reduction of oil produced, speed up of turnover of skin cells, reducing inflammation or fighting bacterial infection. With the majority of drugs that are used, the results may not be seen for the first four or eight weeks. The skin may actually get worse before it gets better. When considering acne treatment Worcester residents have many options that are useful. It could take several months or even years for the condition to clear out fully.

The drug that is recommended by the doctor is dependent on type and severity of the condition. There are topical medications that are applied to the skin or oral medications. In most instances, the drugs are taken in combination with others. Ladies that are pregnant should not use oral prescription medications for this condition. Topical medications are best effective when applied to dry, clean skin some 15 minutes after washing. The benefit of the treatment may not be seen for some time.

Some of the expected side effects include irritation of the skin, peeling, dryness and redness. There are some steps that are recommended to reduce side effects. Some of the recommendations include changing medications, gradual increase of medications and washing off of the used medication after a short while. One example of topical medication is antibiotics. They kill excess bacteria and reduce redness.

Some oral antibiotics are used for either severe or moderate acne. In addition to minimizing bacteria, they fight inflammation. The moment there is improvement in the symptoms or the medications prescribed are not working, tapering off of the medications is recommended. Tapering is useful in preventing resistance of antibiotics which occurs when they are used for treatment over a long time.

In most cases, oral medications are used together with topical medications. Oral antibiotic use will come with certain side effects, the most common being stomach upsets and dizziness. The sensitivity of the skin to the sun is also increased. Besides, teeth discoloration and reduced bone growth in kids will also be possible effects. In some cases, therapies are used, either alone or in combination.

There is the use of light based therapy that has a lot of success in treating acne. It works by targeting bacteria which cause inflammation. Some forms of therapy are done from home and others at the office of the doctor. One form of such therapy, blue light therapy, is done from home using a hand held device. Pain, temporary redness and light sensitivity are some side effects.

There is chemical peel which uses repeated application of chemical solution like salicylic acid. Treatment through chemical peeling is best effective if used in combination with other treatment forms. This therapy is not for people taking oral retinoids. There will be side effects.

Dermatologists could use some special tools for removal of blackheads and whiteheads gently. These are those that may not have been cleared by topical medications. One may experience scarring but such scars can be handled in various ways.
