By Jeannie Chapman

In most places marriage is considered a rite of passage. This is why it is advisable to get into it knowing everything there is to know about this institution. Since marriage is a long time investment and not many people are experienced, except people who have been in previous marriages, it is recommendable to seek counseling. This gives you a rough idea on what to expect from your partner and how to live harmoniously. This also gives the couple several ways of solving conflicts or misunderstandings in an amicable way.

There are several types of counseling and counselors for different stages of every relationship. Premarital counseling is meant for couples that are looking forward to tying the knot. Though it is not mandatory for couples to attend this program, it is greatly recommended. In cases where the couples have different religious beliefs, the counselors come in handy in offering sound advice on how to respect the beliefs of your partner while still maintain the spark in the marriage.

Two very young people who have decided to get married may not know the challenges of marriage. A counselor is able to take them through what to expect when they are married and their duties to ensure they are well informed and prepared for the lifelong commitment. There are special cases of couples or one partner who has had an abusive past. A counselor is able to help them get over past emotions and be able to trust and rely on each other.

Counselors also come in handy in situations when the relationship is a little different from the normal. In relationships where one person has psychological disorders or physical disabilities, the other person has to learn to accommodate their partners and their needs. This includes making sacrifices in their lifestyles and learning to put the needs of the other party and the marriage before theirs. It is also important for people who have health issues. In cases where one of the couple has a drug abuse problem, psychoanalysis is very necessary.

Once a relationship has advanced and the couple is engaged, the marriage is now almost inevitable. At this moment in some states premarital psychoanalysis is recommended by the law. The couple is counseled on family planning practices and how to relate to their partners. They are also enlightened on the legal practices and regulations that govern marriages.

Another very common type of psychoanalysis therapy counseling. This one deals mostly with substance abuse or where one or both of the partners are hooked on drugs. In this kind of psychoanalysis the couple is advised on how to stay clean and support each other through the withdrawal period. It also involves helping the couple handle the emotional stress from previous relationships or abuse.

There is also general psychoanalysis which covers almost every aspect of life. Problems that may arise as a result of reduced finances are also addressed under this type of psychoanalysis. Parenting and family ones also fall under this category.

Couples, engaged or not, can also seek counseling from churches or offices licensed to see over marriages. In this type of psychoanalysis they are required to attend several sessions for them to be considered to have finished the course. The main aim of psychoanalysis is that the couple gets into marriage with the same interests and well-being of everyone involved.
