It is a branch of surgery that deals with human endoskeletal system.

The word orthopedic is derived from two ancient Greek terms paidion and orthos. Paidion means kid while Orthos means either correct or straight. The two words joined then translated into French stands for the art of preventing or rectifying defects in children.

At first, this branch only dealt with correction of spinal cord and bony defects. This practice has however changed with introduction of new and sophisticated technologies. The new equipment and tools have made this work faster and more efficient. Orthopedics is no longer limited to kids as adults are treated nowadays with equal success as in kids. Current orthopedics is less invasive and the implants are more durable and better.

To become an orthopedic surgeon an individual has to undergo four years of training in order to attain a bachelor degree in orthopedic surgery. This is followed by other four years at medical school. This order can still be reversed. After the basic education and training, a person may choose one specialty area. The specialty areas include spine surgery, hand surgery, arthroplasty or total joint reconstruction, elbow and shoulder surgery, and pediatrics orthopedics.

Hand surgery is commonly practiced by plastic surgeons whereas neurosurgeons commonly practice spine surgery. Sports medicine is mostly practiced by family doctors and is normally non-surgical. Having one specialty area gives surgeons adequate time to concentrate and grasp all the content. This results in good services and better ability to counteract all types of emergencies that can occur during operations.

Radiography majorly includes identifying fractures using machines. The most common machine used is the x-ray. X-rays expose all fractures and internal injuries as they penetrate the tissues reaching the bone. The other commonly used technique is arthroscopy. It is mostly used in reconstruction and surgeries of torn ligaments. Arthroscopy is advantageous since a patient takes a less days to recover fully as compared to usual open surgery.

Fractures should be handled with care as they can result in permanent deformities if not attended to in good time and by the right people. Individuals should ensure that the surgeon handling the patient is qualified and operating legally in order to be sure with the outcome. It is advisable to conduct early research in order to be familiar with some of the available specialists. If an individual does not have time for this, then it is wise to good for famous professionals.
