You can buy lean ground turkey at most grocery stores. This ground protein source is a great way to liven up bland pasta recipes and to make casseroles and other dinner dishes. Try to get lean, ground breast meat to get the most benefit from eating ground turkey. Turkey meat is a cheap, protein-rich food that can serve as a replacement for red meat in recipes for foods such as chili and taco mixes. Don't underestimate turkey as a muscle building food.

Cottage Cheese.
People don't include enough cottage cheese in their diets, and that is a shame. There aren't many foods that provide the high levels of glutamine that you can get from cottage cheese. Glutamine is an essential amino acid that promotes muscle tissue healing. Many bodybuilders like to eat cottage cheese as a late evening snack to fuel overnight muscle healing and growth.

Baked Fish.
Fish is truly a super food. If you want a food that is loaded with protein and essential fatty acids, you won't find many foods that stack up with a nice baked fish meal. There are lots of affordable fish cuts that you can pick up at the store to make for lunches or dinners. As long as you stay away from deep fried, breaded fish meals, you'll be eating a lean food that will promote muscle growth.

Nuts.
Another food that is loaded with healthy fatty acids are nuts. Nuts make a great snack food. They contain some protein in addition to healthy, essential fats that are good for your overall health. The bottom line with muscle growth is that it won't occur unless you are healthy. Nuts are a great food to eat sparingly that can provide the kind of nutrition your body needs.

Fruits & Vegetables.
No list of healthy foods would be complete without mentioning the importance of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and veggies may not directly contribute to muscle growth like protein foods do, but they should not be neglected. Many bodybuilders, eager to get as much protein as possible, totally neglect fruits and vegetables. Your body needs the antioxidants, minerals and fiber that fruits and vegetables provide, so be sure to include these foods in your diet.

Eggs.
There's an advertising campaign that says eggs are nature's perfect food. In some ways, this assessment is right on. Eggs are a convenient food to buy and cook. They contain some of the best quality protein of any whole food that is commonly eaten. To stay healthy, it's best to eat egg whites most of the time and only an occasional yolk. Eggs are never to be eaten raw, no matter how many people you see doing this. You can get very sick from raw eggs. So keep eggs in your regular menu rotation, but skip the Rocky Balboa method of drinking raw eggs.

Tuna Fish.
Earlier in this list, fish was mentioned as a great muscle building food. Tuna deserves its own special place on the top 10 list of muscle building foods. Tuna is cheap, easy to take anywhere and it is full of great protein and omega fatty acids essential to good healthy diet. Stock up on tuna when you go to the grocery store for a simple, economical food that helps to pack on muscle mass.

Chicken Breast.
This is one of the staples of bodybuilding diets and fat burning plans. Boneless, skinless chicken breast is a delicious, filling food that is loaded with top quality proteins. Chicken breast is lean and can be incorporated into lots of different recipes. Prices fluctuate on boneless, skinless chicken breast, but you can usually pick it up in bulk when it is on sale. Keep a full supply of chicken breast in your freezer for healthy, muscle promoting meals. Just stay away from the nuggets and fried chicken; they contain too much unhealthy fat.

Some Warnings About Buying Discount Supplements

There has been a lot of information in the news regarding weight and weight loss, as well as news about the economy and how devastating it has been to most people's budgets. In the United States, the obesity rates continue to climb with the current numbers showing that 35% of all US adults are obese. Those numbers have moved many people to try a number of different 

 things to lose that excess weight including extreme diets, weight loss surgery and of course, for those who are willing to put in more time and effort, diet and exercise. Many of those who are trying the latter will also use discount supplements to make sure that they are getting all of the nutrition that they need. There are a number of different supplements that can be used, including protein supplements and supplements for virtually every vitamin and mineral combination imaginable. Supplements can also be found in a number of different styles from drinks to food items and in many cases, tablets, capsules or chewable pill forms.
Discount Supplements: A Billion-Dollar Industry

According to a study paper published by the American Dietetic Association (ADA), supplement sales in this country reached nearly $24 billion in 2007, a number that at that time had been expected to continue to climb. The ADA's explanation of those sales numbers was the aging of the population as well as the general desire to remain healthy and to prevent disease. Supplements that are sold in the largest quantities include calcium, B vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin A beta/carotene, magnesium and iron as well as protein supplements. These supplements have all grown in sales. Vitamin E supplements on the other hand have declined slightly, potentially because of information about the harmful effects of this supplement. 

However, the ADA warns that consumers of the majority of these supplements are not making educated choices about those that they are buying. For instance, people may not be able to decipher the safety or effectiveness of the supplements that they are buying because of confusing labeling. In addition, confusing and conflicting reports that are released by both legitimate and less than trustworthy news sources can leave people trying one supplement one week and then abandoning it the following week because the first has been proven to be unsafe. For instance, Vitamin E was once a favored supplement for skin, hair and nail health as well as for a number of other conditions like heart disease, cancer, and to boost the immune system. The drawback to Vitamin E supplementation is the interference of the vitamin to absorb Vitamin K and should also be avoided in those who are taking medications such as blood thinners and anti-coagulants.

But these concerns are just in relation to supplements in general, not discount supplements, which may have a whole new set of concerns to consider.

Discount Supplements: Are You Getting What You Hope You Are Getting?
The news has been filled with stories about recalls on drugs, dog food and even toothpaste imported from other countries as well as those items that are made in the United States. Ingredients prove to be unsafe or products that were formerly thought of as safe prove to be harmful in the long run. Depending on where you buy your discount supplements, the possibility of unsafe or recalled items getting through and sold to the public can be a serious issue. Stores that specialize in closeouts of other store's inventories can be especially susceptible to getting items that are outdated or expired and while they may pull most of them from their shelves, there is always a chance that a few things will get through.

In addition, discount supplements coming from other countries may not have the full ingredients listed or may be lacking other types of information. Each country has different labeling laws and while those that are specifically imported for sale in the US may have to comply with the standards that are set forth for them, there are many cases of these items being brought into the country through less than legal means. Thanks to the internet, there are dozens of sources for discount supplements and not all of them are safe or anything near what they are advertised to be.

Discount Supplements: Do You Know What You Need?
Men and women have different needs for different supplements. Active adults need more of some nutrients than those that are more sedentary. Someone who is ill may need to increase some nutrients while people with certain types of conditions and diseases may need to increase different ones or eliminate others. It is confusing to know all of the different supplements and their needs. For instance, a woman under the age of 50 may need 1000 mg of calcium a day while a woman who is over that age may need around 1200 mg. The need of a man for calcium is only 800 mg which is equal to three servings of dairy. Too much calcium increases the risk for prostate cancer.

Iron, another discount supplement that is commonly used, is equally confusing. For a woman under 50, the need is 18 mg of iron daily; her need will drop to 8 mg when she reaches 50. A man's need is the same as a woman over 50. Too much iron can be just as problematic as having too little and that may be tricky. Just because you are in a certain age group does not automatically mean that you are going to get the right amount of any nutrient.

2. Do short burst exercising instead of long workouts
Multiple short burst workouts in the 3-10 minute range are a lot better at speeding up your metabolism. If you don't already know, this is an easy way to burn off pounds. Faster metabolism equals faster weight loss. It's as simple as that.

It can be something as easy and running up your stairs at home and then walking back down them for 3 minutes non-stop. Or jumping on a mini-trampoline during 3 minute tv commercials. Whatever, just get in the habit of doing these short workouts. Sneak them into your day. This is great for busy people since you don't have to block off big chunks of time to workout.

2. Add 2 apples and 1 can of black beans to your daily diet
I don't care what you eat. I'm not going to try and change you either. But I do want you to do just these 2 things. Add 2 apples as snacks to your diet and also add in 1 can of black beans to a meal or split it among 2 meals. That's it. Why does this help with getting rid of your big belly? Simple, the fibers clear out your digestive tract and improve your digestion.
