Guidelines For Getting EKG And Phlebotomy Training In Bronx

By Alyce Powell

For those interested in a job in a fast growing area of a medical profession, it might be a good idea to get EKG and phlebotomy training in Bronx. Although really two separate careers, many medical institutions hire them together. Some schools are following the trend and offer them as a combined course of study.

A certified phlebotomist is one who gets blood samples from patients following the directions of a physician. The blood can be tested in a laboratory that analyzes it. Blood must also be taken and tested before a blood transfusion is given. The phlebotomist works under supervision of a medical technologist or a laboratory manager. In the past, this work was often done by a nurse, however, with today's very strict standards, most places prefer to hire someone who has been trained in the specialty of taking blood.

The EKG specialist is used to give electrocardiograms. A special machine is used that is able to measure the electrical impulses that the heart transmits. Electrodes are placed on specific body areas like the arms, legs, and chest. The technician then prints a sheet that the doctor can use for evaluation of issues like the heart and blood vessels. An EKG specialist who has taken advanced course study is also qualified to administer Holster monitoring and/or stress tests. These often require monitoring for twenty four hours or even longer.

Training takes anywhere from four months to two years. Most programs will probably take closer to the two year time period. In order to get this training, find a school that offers this program of study and make sure that it is accredited. You must be at least eighteen with either a diploma or GED to begin the program.

With this course of studies, you will participate in classroom activities and actual hands on work experience. A portion of the classroom requirements may be available online. The hands on work will, of course, need to be done in a lab or medical facility. Most colleges will require studies in subjects like anatomy and communication skills. You need to be able to talk to and empathize with your patients.

You are, of course, responsible for paying for both the course work and the certification exam. Check with your school to see if any financial aid is available for you. If you meet certain criteria, you may qualify for this financial help.

Once the classwork is finished, you must take an exam and pass it to become certified. Once certification is obtained, you can find work in places like hospitals, doctor's offices, clinics, health departments, and labs. Before being hired, be prepared to have a background check done and be up to date with all vaccinations. You will probably also be required to take a TB test.

The jobs for those who have this experience is likely to grow substantially in the next several years. You will very likely find a job quite easily once you are certified. Receiving EKG and phlebotomy training in Bronx can lead to an excellent career. If you have an avid interest in working in a medical field, this is an excellent program to take.
